Trauma Centre - Strengthening Emergency Healthcare in Ikorodu Division

Emergency and trauma cases account for a significant proportion of hospital visits in Lagos State. Medical experts note that thousands of patients treated in hospitals across the state are victims of accidents, injuries, and other trauma-related emergencies.

For a rapidly growing community like Ikorodu Division, the absence of a dedicated trauma facility meant that many critical cases faced delays in receiving specialised emergency care.

To address this urgent need, Rep. Babajimi A. Benson facilitated the construction and equipping of the first-ever Trauma Centre in Ikorodu Division at the General Hospital, Ikorodu. The 40-bed state-of-the-art facility was initiated to expand the hospital’s capacity to handle emergency and trauma-related cases with modern medical equipment and specialised treatment spaces.

The intervention became even more critical as patient demand at the General Hospital, Ikorodu, has grown tremendously over the years. The hospital now attends to about 4,500 patients daily, amounting to roughly 90,000 patients monthly, placing enormous pressure on existing emergency facilities. The new trauma centre is designed to significantly improve the hospital’s ability to manage accidents, severe injuries, and other life-threatening emergencies promptly and effectively.

With specialised wards, modern equipment, and dedicated treatment areas, the trauma centre will reduce mortality and morbidity from trauma, strengthen emergency response capacity, and improve survival outcomes for patients across Ikorodu Division and neighbouring communities.

Beyond infrastructure, this project represents a strategic investment in health security and preparedness. By ensuring that residents have access to immediate and specialised trauma care within their community, Rep. Benson’s intervention is helping to safeguard lives, support healthcare professionals, and reinforce the capacity of the General Hospital, Ikorodu as a key medical hub serving thousands of people daily.
